In Progress
Western Power has successfully installed more than 600,000 advanced meters across the network as of July 2023, which represents half of the total 1.2 million meters on the South West Interconnected System (SWIS).
Advanced meters are digital electrical meters that transmit data to Western Power’s systems. This allows remote monitoring of energy flows and detection of faults or supply issues.
It also provides valuable insight to households and small businesses by offering improved visibility into their energy usage allowing them to better manage their energy consumption.
Installing advanced metering infrastructure is an important step in optimising energy systems and providing households and businesses more choice by enabling more new technologies, like community batteries, to join the network. The overall outcome is a more efficient, cleaner, and more secure network.

July 2023 – Halfway point reached with 600,000 advanced meters installed.
2027 – Entire network to be converted with 1,200,000 advanced meters installed.
Advanced meters for a smarter electricity grid
Installed as part of the WA Government’s Advanced Metering Infrastructure program, advanced meters allow customers greater visibility and increased flexibility to better manage electricity usage.
Advanced meters have a communication device installed enabling communication between the meter and Western Power’s systems. This allows advanced meters to be read automatically and remotely, as well as detecting faults or supply issues.
