Western Australia is in one of the best locations in the world to harness the power of the wind with coastal regions generally having the highest potential for generating electricity using wind.

The 180 megawatt Warradarge Wind Farm is recognised as one of Australia’s best renewable energy initiatives because it is close to established infrastructure and has ample wind supply.

The Warradarge Wind Farm is located in the Mid West region of WA, 15 kilometres north-east of Warradarge, 40 kilometres south-west of Carnamah, and 200 kilometres from the City of Geraldton.

Timeline and Milestones

  • 2018 Warradarge Wind Farm project announced.

  • 2019 – Construction commences on the wind farm.

  • 2019 – Warradarge Wind Farm Community Grants established to support local community initiatives.

  • 2020 – Construction completed and wind farm officially opened.

  • 2023 – Funding announced for potential expansion of the wind farm.

The power of the Warradarge Wind Farm

The Warradarge Wind Farm generates a total of 180 megawatts of electricity with a capacity factor of nearly 50 per cent. This is equivalent to providing power for the typical annual electricity consumption of 144,000 homes in Western Australia.

A 10-kilometre transmission line connects the wind farm sub-station to the existing 330-kilovolt transmission line near Eneabba, which is part of Western Australia’s primary electricity grid - the South West Interconnected System (SWIS).

The Warradarge Wind Farm contributes significantly to the future of renewable energy generation in the State due to its cutting-edge turbine technology and close proximity to the northern section of the SWIS.

Western Australia’s wind power future

Since the launch of Western Australia's first wind farm in 1987, the State has been actively tapping into wind energy for electricity generation. Over the years, this growth in the wind power sector has not only expanded but also generated numerous jobs and opportunities for local communities.

Western Australia has a lot of potential to capture the benefits of wind energy with excellent wind resources and Perth ranking among one of the windiest capital cities in the world. Wind is already playing a key role in our energy mix with an average of 17 per cent of daily electricity in the State’s main grid coming from wind generation.

In 2023, an announcement was made on the potential expansion of the Warradarge Wind Farm as the wind power industry is expected to continue to grow at a rapid rate in the coming years.
