Western Australia’s Climate Action

Western Australia is taking significant steps to prepare for climate change and achieve net zero emissions by 2050.

There are various initiatives in place to support more opportunities in low-carbon jobs and new industries (such as renewable hydrogen, future battery and carbon farming).

Solar, wind, and other renewable sources of energy will power our homes and businesses. This paves the way for reliable and affordable energy for generations to come.

Acting now on climate change

Climate change causes environmental challenges like more frequent and severe droughts, heatwaves, high-risk bushfire weather, extreme rainfall events and rising sea levels. Acting now means reducing the impact on our communities, and environment, while also planning and building industries for the future.

Towards a resilient low-carbon future

The Western Australian Climate Policy sets out the Government’s plan for a climate‑resilient community and a prosperous low‑carbon future.

The Policy commits to adapting to climate change and working with all sectors of the economy to achieve net zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2050.

Western Australia’s approach is to support local jobs with the development of industries such as clean manufacturing and export industries, renewable energy including hydrogen, future batteries and carbon farming.

The Climate Policy in action

The Policy draws climate change actions together and looks beyond business-as-usual to:

  1. Support the net zero transition across the public sector.
  2. Drive low‑carbon energy, mining, and agricultural initiatives.
  3. Guide decarbonisation across the rest of our economy.

These are high priority, high impact actions happening in Western Australia to tackle climate change, protect our environment, and create a stronger economy for generations to come.

Reaching net zero by 2050

The science shows that to avoid the worst impacts of climate change and preserve a liveable planet, global temperature increase needs to be limited to well below 2°C, and preferably 1.5°C, above pre-industrial levels.

Currently, the Earth is already about 1.1°C warmer than it was in the late 1800s, and emissions continue to rise. Limiting global warming to no more than 1.5°C – as outlined in the Paris Agreement – requires urgent, deep and sustained emissions reduction and achievement of net zero emissions by 2050.

The WA Government has committed to reducing government emissions by 80 per cent below 2020 levels by 2030.

WA's climate change legislation

Climate change legislation is being developed to create a framework to achieve net zero emissions by 2050, including the requirement to set interim emissions targets in the lead up to 2050.

The legislation will require the Minister for Climate Action to report to Parliament each year on Western Australia’s emissions, and how we are progressing against the emission reduction targets.

Climate change legislation will ensure that Western Australia contributes to global efforts to reduce greenhouse gas emissions.

Climate action categories

There is a lot of action being taken right now across private and public sectors to tackle climate change.

Western Australia’s government departments and agencies are working together to address climate action, making the most of WA’s innovation and wealth of natural and mineral resources.

Western Australian Climate Policy focuses on actions to position our State for the low‑carbon transition and build a more resilient economy and community. There are short, medium and long term actions to create key outcomes under each theme.
